Electrical service grounding

There are two types of electrical grounding systems in homes. The electrical equipment grounding system and the earth grounding system. Both are crucial in keeping the electrical system as safe as possible. The equipment grounding system is attached to the neutral service wire that enters the home from the street. This system helps keep people from being electrocuted. This type of grounding also allows for breakers and fuses to trip properly. This grounding system acts as an emergency path for current to take, electrical current flows out to the transformer at the electrical pole. For electrical current to properly flow there needs to be a path to ground. Electricity normally travels through the interior wiring system in the home. If electrical current is flowing in a place where a person can come in contact with it, another path to ground is established. The human Body acts as an electrical conductor and provides an unwanted path to ground for electrical current. The equipment grounding system protects us from becoming this inadvertent path to ground. The grounding system is connected to the electrical panels and other metal electrical boxes installed throughout the home. This is done so if a person were to touch an electrical box with an electrical problem you will not become the path to ground and will not get electrocuted. The second function of the equipment grounding system is to allow fuses to blow or breakers to trip. When an electrical box becomes energized enough current may flow to blow a fuse or trip a breaker. This is a very good result because it alerts us that an electrical problem may exist. The earth grounding system is a path for lightning to travel. This system of grounding does not carry current. The only time that the earth grounding system would come into play was when an unexpected electrical charge takes place. An example of such a charge would be a lightning strike. A secondary purpose of the earth grounding system also helps to dissipate static electricity. To understand the two systems of grounding one must understand the difference between the bare ground wire and the white neural wire. The white neutral wire carries current always as part of a normal circuit configuration. The current flowing through the neutral wire travels back to the service transformer located at the pole. The bare ground wires do not carry current on a regular basis. The wire is used at emergency only. If something goes wrong the ground wire will carry electrical current safely to the neutral service wire at the service box. |
